Founder of Modern Iraqi Art: Jewad Selim
Jewad Selim was an Iraqi painter and sculptor who was considered one of the founders of modern art in Iraq. Born in Ankara during the Ottoman Empire in 1919, he became an influential figure especially because of his central role in founding the Baghdad Modern Art Group alongside Shakir Hassan Al Said and Mohammed Ghani Hikmat.
He started studying sculpture in Paris in 1938, then in Rome, but his time in both places was disrupted due to WWII. Eventually, he was able to enroll at London’s Slade School, where he met Lorna, a British woman from Sheffield who would become his wife and move back to Baghdad with him. There he founded the sculpture department at Baghdad’s Institute of Fine Arts.

Shortly after the revolution in Iraq in 1958, Selim was commissioned to create a new monument for Baghdad’s city center: what is known as the “Monument of Freedom”. Selim died of a heart attack in 1961 before the monument was completed. As Jabra Ibrahim Jabra put it: “no single artist has had so much influence on art in Iraq...an influence that has in time overflowed Iraq’s borders to the rest of the Arab world.”

بدأ دراسة النحت في باريس سنة 1938، ثم انتقل إلى روما، لكن إقامته لم تطل في كلا البلدين بسبب الحرب العالمية الثانية. تمكن بعد ذلك من الإلتحاق بمدرسة سلايد في لندن، حيث التقى لورنا، وهي سيدة بريطانية من شيفيلد، أصبحت فيما بعد زوجته، وانتقلت معه إلى بغداد. هناك أسس دائرة النحت في معهد بغداد للفنون الجميلة
بعد استقلال العراق بوقت قصير، في سنة 1959 تحديدًا، تم تكليف سليم بإبداع نصب تذكاري بوسط مدينة بغداد والذي اشتهر فيما بعد بنصب الحرية
توفي سليم أثر نوبة قلبية سنة 1961، قبل إكتمال العمل بالنصب التذكاري للمدينة وهو كما وصفه جبرا ابراهيم جبرا:"لم يكن لأي فنان آخر سواه ، مثل هذا التأثير الكبير على الفن في العراق ... تأثير تطور بمرور الزمن ليتدفق من حدود العراق إلى باقي أنحاء العالم العربي
