Listen, Read, Watch: Egypt

During our much-needed winter break, we published a series of curated #ListenReadWatch over on our Instagram. Every post offered one album to listen to, a book to read, and a film to watch from somewhere in the Arab world. We envisioned this series as a way to celebrate some of the best creative minds from across the region and times.

Listen:
Five Seasons, Dina El Wedidi

Dina El Wedidi is a singer, composer, guitarist, producer and storyteller. You can watch our NYUAD Podcast interview with her where she takes us through all her different musical eras.

Read:
The Hidden Faces of Eve, Nawal El Saadawi

Pioneering Egyptian feminist writer Nawal El Saadawi offers an incisive account of oppression of women in the Arab world. Drawing on her own experiences working as a doctor in rural Egypts and advocating for women’s rights, she draws a detailed picture of the injustices and violence that women face in the society she grew up in (via Bloomsbury Publishing).

Watch:
Souad, Ayten Amin

The film follows two sisters as they reckon with the role of social media and traditional religion. The Guardian called this a “sharp, subtle coming-of-age drama.”
